Authors’ Note
When we wrote “More Than Me,” we wanted to capture the moment when a young girl named Sophie, who will one day become Catherine the Great, discovers her own power—before the world tells her what she is allowed to be. She has just outridden every boy in her village. She is exhilarated and defiant, not yet aware of how costly that confidence will become. For young singers, it is a chance to feel strength and joy at the same time, to live inside a moment of freedom that belongs entirely to her.
Character Insight
Sophie is fourteen and a half when she sings this. The song sits at the turning point between childhood and womanhood—curious, fearless, and full of possibility. Teachers may offer it to students exploring that age or emotional range, or to anyone who remembers what it felt like to believe that anything was possible.

Authors’ Note
When we wrote “Growing Closer,” we wanted to give voice to the moment Sophie first stops being her mother’s child and begins to become her own person. She has just recovered from a near-fatal illness and finds herself face-to-face with Joanna for the first time in weeks. What begins as a tentative reunion turns volatile as Sophie realizes she must choose her own future, even if it means defying the woman who raised her. It’s a song about awakening, resistance, and the birth of independence.
Character Insight
At this point in the story, Sophie is reclaiming her strength after illness—physically fragile, but emotionally fierce. The song captures the intensity of that turning point: love tangled with rebellion, fear turning into courage. It invites singers to explore complexity—the moment when obedience gives way to self-definition.

When we wrote “Yours, Mine,” we wanted to give Johanna a moment of reckoning—a quiet, devastating awareness of what her ambition has cost. In pursuing her own power, she has shattered her daughter’s future and their bond. This song lives in the stillness after everything has fallen apart, when there is nothing left to control and no one left to persuade. It’s the sound of a woman realizing too late that victory has turned to loss.
Character Insight
Johanna sings this alone, stripped of pretense and position. The force that once drove her now collapses inward, leaving only clarity and grief. The song asks the performer to inhabit the weight of consequence—where power, pride, and love meet their breaking point.
